This trail into the Vinegar Hill-Indian Rock Scenic Area offers a spectacular vista of the Middle Fork Valley and the peaks of the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness far to the south, while ascending the south face of Sunrise Butte.
From the town of Prairie City, OR., travel east on US Highway 26 approximately 13 miles to the junction with US Highway 7. Follow US Highway 7 approximately 2 miles to the junction with County Road 20 (Middle Fork of the John Day River Road). Follow County Road 20 approximately 8 miles to the junction of Forest Road 4550. Follow Forest Road 4550 approximately 4 miles to the junction with Forest Road 4555. Follow the Forest Road 4555 approximately 2 miles to the trailhead.
