Situated in a small valley, near the confluence of the North Fork and Middle Fork of the John Day River, Monument enjoys the mildest winters of Grant County’s incorporated cities.

It also endures the hottest summer weather. Due to a favorable growing season, commercial orcharding is a successful enterprise between Monument and Kimberly, along the Middle Fork of the John Day River. The main industries are agriculture and timber.
